A Colfax man died after a crash involving a big rig and a pickup truck on Interstate 80 near Auburn, according to CBS Sacramento.

The crash happened late Tuesday night on westbound I-80 near Placer Hills Road, north of Auburn. The California Highway Patrol said a Freightliner big rig was hauling a tank full of water when the driver reportedly lost control and crashed into the center divider. The tank trailer detached and crossed into the eastbound lanes, where a pickup truck crashed into it.

Authorities said the pickup driver died in the crash. His name has not yet been released, but CHP identified him as a Colfax resident.

According to CBS Sacramento, CHP said the Freightliner driver fled the scene and had not been contacted as of the report. The owner of the trucking company is reportedly cooperating with the investigation.

What Families Should Know After a Fatal Big Rig Crash (Legal Insights by Emile A. Davis)

Commercial trucking collisions often involve far more than a simple driver negligence claim. In a trucking collision like this, investigators will likely examine not only why the Freightliner driver allegedly lost control, but also whether the trucking company properly maintained the tractor and trailer, whether the trailer coupling and safety systems were defective or improperly inspected, whether the driver was adequately trained, and whether hours-of-service, fatigue, distraction, or mechanical issues played a role. The allegation that the driver fled the scene may also become significant evidence in the case, potentially supporting claims of consciousness of wrongdoing and potentially exposing the driver to additional civil as well as criminal consequences. In catastrophic trucking cases, electronic control module (black box) data, dashcam footage, inspection records, dispatch communications, and maintenance logs often become critical evidence that must be preserved immediately.

This incident comes at a time of a significant shift in trucking litigation following the recent Supreme Court decision in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, LLC. That decision expanded the potential scope of liability exposure in trucking cases by allowing plaintiffs greater ability to pursue negligent hiring, retention, supervision, and other state law claims against freight brokers. For families pursuing wrongful death claims after a fatal big rig collision, the ruling may allow for additional insured defendants.

A deadly truck crash can leave families searching for answers about what happened, who may be responsible, and whether important evidence is being preserved. In crashes involving a big rig, investigators may review the driver’s actions, trucking company records, vehicle maintenance, trailer connection equipment, inspection history, roadway conditions, dashcam footage, witness statements, and any available electronic data.

When a fatal crash involves a driver who allegedly leaves the scene, it may raise additional questions about accountability, insurance coverage, and what steps surviving family members can take while the investigation is still ongoing.
