San Francisco Deadly Hit-and-Run on Mission Street

A person was killed Monday in a hit-and-run collision in San Francisco, according to local reports. The incident happened on Mission Street near South Van Ness Avenue, where police responded to the scene and began investigating the fatal crash.
Witnesses in the area described hearing a loud impact before emergency crews arrived. When officers got there, the victim was found in the roadway near a gas station and car wash. The individual died at the scene.
San Francisco police said the driver involved left the area after the collision. A short time later, officers located a Mercedes matching the description of the vehicle and pursued it briefly before stopping it. The driver was taken into custody, while others inside the vehicle were released.
Surveillance footage reportedly showed the victim on the hood of the moving vehicle before falling into the street and being run over. Authorities have not publicly explained why the victim was in the roadway or released full details about how the initial contact happened. The investigation remains ongoing.
Unfortunately, hit and run incidents occur regularly. Like here, it is important for anyone investigating a hit and run to look for cameras that may have captured the incident. Often, nearby businesses, or even residences, have video cameras that record events outside. Often, these get recorded over quickly, so getting information from them, or at the very least, sending a “preservation of evidence” letter asking that the video be maintained, is a crucial step toward finding evidence documenting the incident as well as the hit and run vehicle and/or driver.
Crashes like this can leave victims and families facing overwhelming questions after a sudden injury or loss.
