California Law Restricts Cars Entering Bike Lanes

Petaluma, CA (October 15, 2016) – A pedestrian was walking west in the bike lane of the 500 block of Lakeville Street in Petaluma when he was hit by a 2015 Volkswagen Golf on Friday October 14, 2016 at around 7:45 p.m. He died the following day.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Andres Solario of Petaluma. The the impact threw Mr. Solario approximately 50 feet. He was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major head injuries.  The driver of the Volkswagen was 27-year-old Brian Bianucci of Petaluma, who stayed at the scene and cooperated with the police investigation and consented to a blood draw at Petaluma Valley Hospital.

California Vehicle Code Section 21209 prohibits cars from driving in a bike lane except to: a) park where permitted, b) enter or leave the roadway or c) to prepare for a turn within a distance of 200 feet from an intersection.
