Children, the elderly and people who are alcohol-impaired are most likely to be involved in an accident. The elderly population accounted for 9 percent of pedestrian injuries in 2012 and 20 percent of pedestrian deaths in that same year.

Alcohol and vehicle speed can both increase the likelihood of a pedestrian accident. Higher vehicle speeds can lead to more serious injuries. When it comes to alcohol, it should be noted that in 48 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents, either the pedestrian or the driver had been drinking.
