Defective products could lead to bike crashes in California By chris on October 23, 2014

When you think of bike accidents in California, what do you think of first? For many cyclists, the first thing that comes to mind is the way that some motorists can be very inattentive to bikers on the road. Drivers may cut bikes off, veering into the bike lanes, and parked drivers may open their doors into these lanes, blocking the path so quickly that a cyclist cannot avoid an accident.

While these are valid concerns, it is important to note that defective products are also to blame for some crashes. When a bike breaks while it is in use, the cyclist who is using it may be thrown into a violent, unavoidable crash that leads to serious injuries.

For example, a defective chain could jam up, locking the pedals in place. This can make it impossible to pedal or -- depending on what type of bike you ride -- use your brakes. When this happens while you are in traffic, going down a hill, or even just riding by yourself, the bike can go out of control in a hurry.

Furthermore, even when a bike does not break down itself, a defective helmet can lead to serious injuries in a crash that would otherwise not have been very worthy of note. The helmet is there to protect you, and it has to do its job as advertised in any accident. When factory defects prevent it from doing so, medical costs could skyrocket past what they would have been otherwise.
