Former San Francisco firefighter Michael Quinn surrendered himself yesterday to police in connection with a June 29 drunk driving accident.

Authorities accuse Quinn of driving drunk while on duty. He crashed into a motorcyclist after running a light in South of Market.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the motorcyclist suffered severe personal injuries in the crash, which occurred at Fifth and Howard. Quinn reportedly remained at the crash scene for a half an hour before going to a bar and chugging water in an attempt to lower his blood alcohol level.

The grand jury did not charge Quinn with hit-and-run because he remained at the accident scene for a while. He does however face charges of drunken driving causing serious injury and driving under the influence (which doesn't require proof that he was above the legal limit to drive.)

Quinn was a 23-year SFFD veteran at the time of the crash. His blood-alcohol level when he returned to the fire station was 0.13 percent.

The motorcyclist was 49-year-old Jack Frazier. He suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in the crash. He was reportedly thrown into a fire hydrant.
