Elderly woman killed on Fillmore Street
A 91-year-old woman was run over and killed on Fillmore Street last week. The SF Streets Blog reports that the crash happened last Thursday as the woman crossed mid-block on the street.
Authorities are declining to charge the driver with a crime or even cite him because the woman was jay-walking.
Aaron Bialick of the SF Streets Blog notes that California law requires drivers to exercise "due care for the safety of any pedestrian" and to make sure that it is safe to start vehicles before moving. The driver in this case appears to have done neither. Footage shows the truck stopped while covering the sidewalk, so it is possible the woman could not have crossed at the designated cross stop due to the driver's actions.
Police say that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with their investigation. Witnesses recalled seeing the woman pinned underneath the front tire of the truck. She was alert and talking when she was rushed to the hospital but died of her injuries a short time thereafter.
This is the fourth pedestrian death in San Francisco for 2014.
