A Petaluma-based slaughterhouse has issued a massive recall of 8.7 million pounds of meat processed in 2013. The Press Democrat reports that Rancho Feeding Corp. expanded a recall announced last month after an investigation revealed that it proceeded "diseased and unsound animals" without proper inspections.

USDA officials say that the meat products produced by the facility were "unfit for human food" and has demanded the removal of these products from the marketplace.

The recall impacts all beef processed at the facility between Jan. 1, 2013 and Jan. 7, 2014. The facility has temporarily ceased operations after the recall.

The impacted meat was sold by at least 13 retailers including G&G Market Stores in Petaluma and Santa Rosa and Sonoma Market.

It is unclear how many people consumed meat products produced by Rancho, or whether any illnesses have been linked with the facility. Employees of the facility were reportedly told not speak to any journalists concerning the recall
