A high speed car accident has left two San Jose teens dead. CBS News reports that the accident happened Saturday night shortly before midnight on Chynoweth Avenue and Derek Drive.

There were five males in the car at the time of the crash according to San Jose police spokesman Jason Dwyer.

Police say that a 19-year-old was driving a 1999 Ford Contour at a high rate of speed when he crashed into a tree in the center divide of Chynoweth. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and a 16-year-old passenger died at a hospital a few hours later. The other three passengers have non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities do not know what caused this accident, but a preliminary investigation indicates that no drugs or alcohol were involved.

Car accidents are the leading killer of California teens. The majority of teen crashes are attributable to a lack of experience and unsafe driving habits such as speeding or failing to yield to oncoming vehicles.
