Cyclist killed in Mission District truck accident By chris on May 24, 2013

A 21-year-old Clayton man was recently killed in a Mission District bicycle accident. Authorities say that the man was biking shortly before 7 a.m. yesterday morning when he was run over by a Recology garbage truck driving in the same direction.

The truck reportedly began making a turn from 16th Street onto South Van Ness. The abrupt turn caused the cyclist to run into the back of the truck.

The cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver did not initially know that he had hit the cyclist until witnesses flagged him down.

Police say that drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be involved in this accident and that the garbage truck driver is cooperating with their investigation.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the cyclist is a former wrestler at Clayton Valley High School. He was riding his bike to work at the time of the accident according to his mother.
