Several people were killed in San Jose this weekend in a deadly Highway 101 crash which may be linked to distracted driving. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a Los Angeles driver and two of his passengers were killed Saturday shortly before 1 a.m.

The 58-year-old Los Angeles man pulled his Jeep over on Highway 101 for unknown reasons when a 28-year-old woman smacked into the back of the Jeep at 65 mph. The impact of the car accident sent the Jeep tumbling down an embankment and killed the driver, his 63-year-old brother and an unidentified 54-year-old female passenger.

Only one person in the Jeep survived the crash. Authorities say that a 55-year-old woman was pulled from the wreckage and sent to the hospital with only minor injuries. The 28-year-old San Jose woman who caused the accident also had minor injuries.

This crash is still under investigation and it is unclear whether the San Jose woman was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident. Another common cause of such crashes is distracted driving. Distracted drivers are more likely to hit pedestrians and disabled vehicles at night, especially when the disabled or stopped vehicles fail to use hazard lights or stop in lanes of traffic.
