A motorcycle accident in San Francisco's Richmond District killed one person and left another in critical condition. Authorities say that the accident happened Sunday evening around 6:40 p.m. at the intersection of Fulton Street and 30th Avenue. The motorcycle reportedly entered the intersection and became pinned under an Audi.

The 39-year-old San Francisco motorcyclist was pinned under the car and later pronounced dead at San Francisco general hospital. His 41-year-old female passenger was ejected from the bike and is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries according to police spokespeople.

No citations have been issued in this crash and it is still under investigation. No one in the Audi was injured. Many similar intersection crashes are caused by drivers who run lights while trying to speed through yellow traffic signals. Driver distraction and inattention also play large roles in similar crashes.

In recent years traffic circles have proliferated throughout the country in order to reduce the number of traffic accidents in crowded cities. Some cities have also seen success in using traffic cameras, also known as "red light cameras" which automatically ticket individuals caught running lights. The use of traffic circles and red-light cameras has cut the fatal accident rate drastically in some cities, with many highly-deadly intersections now having no annual fatalities.
