Head-on collision leaves California motorcyclist injured
A head-on collision occurred in San Mateo County this past weekend that left a motorcycle rider with serious injuries. The motorcycle accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 25, 2012 just west of Portola Valley on Highway 84.
The head-on collision involved the motorcycle and a car, and it was not doubt that the motorcycle rider would be the least protected person involved in the accident. Even when a cyclist wears every ounce possible of protective clothing such as a helmet, they are still left exposed.
California Highway Patrol officers arrived on the scene some time near 1:30 in the afternoon. They found a motorcycle and a 2007 Lexus badly damaged on Highway 84 just west of state Highway 35. After an initial investigation, they determined that a 20-year-old man had been driving the motorcycle, and the Lexus was had been driven by a 67-year-old man.
Accident reports say that the motorcycle rider had been attempting to follow the highway as it turned to the left. At some point on the curve, something caused the rider to lose control of the small vehicle. When he lost control, the bike swerved across the center lane and into the path of the oncoming Lexus.
The motorcyclist was determined to have serious injuries and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated. Medical experts determined that the injuries while serious were not life-threatening.
California Highway Patrol officers shut down the highway for about 40 minutes as they investigated the crash and cleared the debris from the roadway. When they were able to reopen the roads, the traffic was limited by one-way traffic control.
