Police Investigate California Route 125 Fatal Accident with No Witnesses
Police responded to a 911 call late Tuesday evening about a motorcycle accident that occurred at some point in time shortly before the call. From what is currently known by police, there were no witnesses to the accident besides the victims involved. According to police reports, several drivers reported seeing a motorcycle stranded in between the lanes of the roadway with the motorcycle positioned in a way that suggested a motorcycle accident had possibly occurred. The callers had reported passing the downed motorcycle at approximately 7:37 in the evening and that the driver was not visible in the surrounding area.
Law enforcement officials with the California Highway Patrol immediately arrived on the scene and found an overturned Harley Davidson stranded on the southbound Route 125's transitional lanes.
After an initial investigation by the police, they reported that it appeared that one of the riders had fallen from his bike and the momentum of the crash had sent his body over the edge of the freeway. He landed below on the roadway shoulder running alongside of La Mesa Boulevard on the ramp leading to eastbound Interstate 8. The severe fall from the upper freeway caused severe injuries from which the motorcycle rider was unable to survive. After searching the scene, police found a second motorcycle passenger. The second passenger was immediately taken to the nearest local hospital where he was treated for the injuries he sustained in the single-bike accident.
As of this moment, police are unsure how the accident occurred and were thus far unable to interview the surviving rider in order to investigate the events that led up to the fatal accident.
