San Francisco man hit and killed by Muni bus in SoMa
A male cyclist was killed this morning in a cycling accident at the intersection of Bryant, Division and 11th Streets.
Authorities have not released the man's name yet.The San Francisco Streets Blog reports that the man was hit by a Muni bus.
Footage of the crash shows a large trash a bag tied to the bike and bottles strewn across the intersection.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the bus driver is a 10-year Muni veteran and will be drug tested according to government protocol. There were about a dozen riders on the bus at the time of the crash but none of them were injured.
Members of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition have criticized the poor design of the intersection and called for more bicycle safety awareness.
"We are deeply saddened to hear that another person was hit and killed while biking on SoMa streets today," the SF Bicycle Coalition wrote on its blog. "We are still awaiting details of the crash. What we do know is that this person was hit and killed by a Muni bus at the poorly designed and high-speed intersection of Bryant and Division Streets. Our hearts go out to the friends and family of the person who was killed today."
KTVU reports that camera footage from the bus may shed light into what exactly caused this fatal crash.
"San Francisco is a very congested place with narrow streets," Police Spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said. "So, if you're a motorist watch out for pedestrians and bicyclist."
