Passenger Killed, Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Napa Highway 12 Crash

A motorcycle passenger was killed and the operator of the motorcycle was seriously injured after a crash on Highway 12 in Napa on Tuesday afternoon.

According to KTVU, the California Highway Patrol responded to the eastbound lanes of Highway 12 at Kelly Road around 1:52 p.m. on May 12, 2026. Investigators reported that the motorcyclist was carrying a passenger and splitting lanes when the motorcycle struck a black Honda in the right-hand lane.

The impact ejected the motorcycle passenger onto the roadway. The passenger was then struck by another passing vehicle and died at the scene. Authorities had not released the victim’s identity at the time of the report.

The motorcycle operator suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa. The drivers of the Honda and the third vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The crash caused major traffic delays on Highway 12. Eastbound lanes near Kelly Road were closed for more than an hour while CHP investigated and cleared the scene. The lanes reopened around 3:23 p.m.

Legal Insights from Emile A. Davis

California was the first state in the Union to make “lane sharing” or “lane splitting” by motorcycles legal. (California Vehicle Code § 21658.1.) The vehicle code defines lane splitting as a motorcycle riding “between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane.”  While the law itself does not set a hard maximum speed for lane splitting, it allowed the California Highway Patrol to publish guidelines.  Those guidelines indicate that the lane splitting vehicle should not travel more than about 10MPH faster than the surrounding traffic, and is safest when the traffic is not moving more than 30 miles per hour.

The Dolan Law Firm has successfully litigated many cases where a motorcyclist is injured while lawfully sharing or splitting lanes.

This Napa Highway 12 crash is a tragic reminder of how quickly a motorcycle collision can become fatal, especially when multiple vehicles are involved. Motorcycle passengers and riders have very little protection in a crash, and a complete investigation can be important to determine what happened and whether negligence contributed to the collision.
